WHO CHOOSES THIS STUFF?

Has anyone else noticed the picture, badly reproduced above, which is used to illustrate the governments new Defence Department Website?

It appears to depict a group of unarmed individuals filing on to a U.S. CH-53 helicopter. (Not an aircraft in the Canadian inventory.)

It is hard to know what, if anything this has to do with the Canadian Armed Forces. One supposes that it is designed to reflect nothing and offend no one.

Perhaps in order to insure that no one will be shocked by what they find on the website in future in might be best to add a disclaimer warning visitors that they may encounter pictures of armed Canadians if they continue.

It reminds one of all those pictures of American G.I.s, Royal Navy ships and B-17s used by Canadian television networks to illustrate stories about Canadian forces in WWII.

We don't really expect Canadian television programmers to know anything about their own history but it is sad to realize that the government has little knowledge of, or care for, those who work in the Department of National Defence, even sadder to think that no one in the Department noticed that the picture that illustrates the work they do doesn’t actually include any identifiable Canadians.

UPDATE - THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19/2013

It didn't take long for my ignorance to be exposed. Tony Prudori at Milnews,ca pointed out that the banner image I mentioned is based on a CF Combat Camera photo of 2 PPCLI troops getting a lift in a US Marine chopper during training in Hawaii.

Although the photo is not as irrelevant as I assumed, I still believe it to be a poor choice.
